- The grinding circuit in mineral processing often accounts for 30%∼50% of the total production cost, yet it is difficult to optimise due to the restrictions of the measurement technologies in the mill environment. Numerical modelling such as discrete element modelling (DEM) remains the primary tool to improve the mill designs. However, due to the material being slurry in wet processing, DEM alone may not be able to reflect the grinding mechanism within a mill, particularly the discharge rate. The research presented in this paper developed a coupled DEM-smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) framework to model the wet grinding mechanism. The two-way coupling framework accounts for the interactive force between the solid's particle phase and the fluid particle phase. A comparison between the DEM only and the DEM-SPH coupling simulation of a semi-autogenous mill was performed. Results indicated that the mill discharge rate obtained from the DEM-SPH coupling showed accurate prediction over DEM only modelling, comparing to the operational data. In addition, the DEM-SPH coupling method is also able to indicate the solids concentration of the modelled slurry, which showed similar ratio to the measured data. Consequently, the developed method is able to quantitatively predict and improve the grinding mill design.
